Six honest ways to earn from a content website

Ads are the obvious answer and usually the worst one. Here is what actually pays, with realistic numbers and the traffic each route needs.

Most people build a website, add ads, and then wonder why the income is disappointing. Ads are the easiest option to set up and the hardest to make meaningful. Here are six routes, roughly in order of how much traffic each one needs.

1. Display ads

Simple to start, needs volume. On Indian traffic you are typically looking at a low single-digit rupee amount per thousand views, so income only becomes serious in the hundreds of thousands of monthly pageviews. Treat it as a baseline, not a plan.

2. Affiliate recommendations

Far better economics, because you are paid for outcomes rather than impressions. It works when your content already answers a buying question — hosting, courses, tools, books. One genuinely useful comparison article can out-earn a month of ads.

3. Selling your own digital product

The best margin available to you: no inventory, no shipping, and you keep almost all of the price. A template, a script, a spreadsheet, a question bank — anything your audience already asks you for.

4. Services

If your site demonstrates competence, people will pay you to do the thing. Installation, setup, migration, consulting. This is usually the fastest first rupee, because it needs an audience of one.

5. Sponsorships

Once you have a defined audience, brands will pay for direct access to it. This needs credibility more than raw traffic — a small, specific audience is often worth more than a large, vague one.

6. Memberships

Recurring, predictable and the hardest to earn. It requires something people cannot get free elsewhere, delivered reliably. Do not start here.

What to actually do

Stack them in this order: put ads on for a baseline, add affiliate links where the intent is commercial, then build one product of your own. The product is what turns a website into a business.
